Hello.

I'm not japanese so I cannot reply well to your question, but anyway, you can find the meaning of "light and darkness" or "light and shade" in 明暗（めいあん）.

About the difference between 闇 and 暗, maybe we'd need to search in 漢字源 dictionary or something like that to find the origin of these two kanji.

I found something about the difference between 闇 and 暗 on this website:

It's all in japanese and I don't have the time to translate it now.

There are some people saying that when you use 闇, there is a feeling of strangeness, something mysterious.
This kanji seems to be more "romantic" too.

I think that if we'd talk together in english, you would laught at my french pronounciation, haha. Also, since I came to Japan, my english has really became bad I think. I also think that when I'll go back to France, I'll sometimes insert some japanese words (without noticing about it, haha).

I've to improve my english too... I love languages so I wanna learn more ^__^
