I'm not japanese so I cannot reply well to your question, but anyway, you can find the meaning of "light and darkness" or "light and shade" in 明暗（めいあん）.

About the difference between 闇 and 暗, maybe we'd need to search in 漢字源 dictionary or something like that to find the origin of these two kanji.

It's all in japanese and I don't have the time to translate it now.

There are some people saying that when you use 闇, there is a feeling of strangeness, something mysterious.
This kanji seems to be more "romantic" too.

Hi,
I was just wondering, there are so many different kanji meaning darkness, do they all mean the same thing?
And if the Japanese Kanji for Yami (Darkness) and Hikari (light) were placed next to each other would they read as darkness and light, or as something completely different?
Please help, I'm so confused lol.

I've a look at the database and it seems that all the things written in japanese (for wiki) have been "transformed" in weird characters. I knew that titles for the JLPT changed like that... Anyway, I don't know the reason. Maybe I'll have to restart wiki page from scratch ><
